Duck Rice, Goat Curry and Good Company
We made our way to one of our favourite spots along Mozambique’s Elephant Coast—Ponta do Ouro, where the ocean sparkles with an irresistible turquoise glow and the coastal air carries the faint scent of salt and adventure. Here, tucked in its relaxed elegance, sits Kaya Kweru, a place we’ve eaten at before and always look forward to returning to. Each visit promises a feast that feels like both a homecoming and a culinary adventure, and this time was no exception.
Our table was a celebration of colour, aroma, and flavour—a true feast for the senses. At the centre was duck rice with chorizo, the golden rice glistening with rich, aromatic duck fat, punctuated by deep red, smoky slices of chorizo. The aroma alone was intoxicating: the smokiness of the sausage mingling with the earthy, savoury fragrance of slow-cooked duck. Each bite was sublime—the tender duck melting on the tongue, the chorizo adding bold, spicy pops, the rice infused with delicate hints of garlic and onion. Simply put, it was indulgent perfection.
Beside it, the goat curry beckoned with its deep russet sauce, dotted with vibrant orange carrots and golden potatoes. The fragrance was enchanting: earthy cumin, fragrant coriander, and a subtle warmth of chili that teased the senses. The goat was melt-in-your-mouth tender, each bite layered with spice and richness, while the vegetables soaked up the sauce’s luxurious depth, offering sweet, comforting counterpoints.
To balance these hearty flavours, a cucumber, tomato, onion, and coriander salad added bursts of freshness and colour. Emerald cucumber, ruby-red tomatoes, and purply-red onions, tossed with fragrant green coriander, created a dish that was as beautiful as it was refreshing. Every bite was crisp, light, and vibrant, perfectly offsetting the richness of the mains.
Together, the table was a symphony of Mozambican cuisine: smoky and indulgent, earthy and spiced, crisp and vibrant. Every aroma, every colour, every flavour invited you to taste, savour, and linger. And oh, we loved every bite—each dish a reminder of why Kaya Kweru remains one of our favourite culinary destinations along the Elephant Coast. It’s more than a meal; it’s an experience that leaves your senses alive and your heart full.
