There are travel moments that feel like they’ve been styled by the universe—sunlight falling just right, the ocean humming softly in the background, and a table laid with flavours that seem to capture the soul of the place. One such moment unfolded for us on the warm shores near Kaya Kweru, where we shared a beautifully curated snack platter with the effortlessly stylish Sandra and her equally charming husband, Luis.

The platter arrived on a rustic wooden board, the kind that instantly evokes the elegance of slow, thoughtful dining. It was arranged in a chic, tapenade-inspired style—vibrant, generous, and impossibly inviting. Before we tasted anything, our eyes were already feasting.

At the centre lay a glossy mound of freshly chopped orange-red chilli sauce, glowing like a jewel in the afternoon sun. Bright, fiery, and aromatic, it offered a bold contrast to the more delicate elements around it. To one side, perfect little cheddar cheese cubes added a warm golden pop—rich, creamy, and comforting in their simplicity. The Danish vetbrought a smooth, decadent note, its subtle tang adding sophistication to the mix.

And then, the stars of the platter:
beef samosas and chicken samosas, crisp and golden, folded into neat, tempting triangles. Each bite offered a satisfying crunch followed by layers of fragrant spice—gentle heat, earthy depth, the unmistakable comfort of well-seasoned meat enveloped in delicate pastry. Paired with the chilli sauce, their flavours were elevated into something electric yet balanced.

The colours alone were a celebration—amber cheeses, ruby-orange chillies, sun-kissed pastry, and rustic wooden tones. It was a palette of warmth and vibrancy, mirroring the coastline around us.

The flavours?
A perfect chorus.

The salty creaminess of the cheeses softened the heat of the chilli.
The freshness of the sauce awakened the warm spices in the samosas.
The interplay of textures—crispy, creamy, juicy, velvety—kept every bite exciting.

It was the kind of platter that encourages conversation, laughter, and lingering bites… which is exactly what unfolded. Sharing this experience with Sandra and Luis added a layer of joy no food can create on its own. Their elegant style, warm humour, and easy presence turned a simple snack into a memorable coastal gathering.

As the ocean breeze drifted across the table and the late afternoon sun cast a soft glow on our little feast, everything felt beautifully aligned—good food, good company, and a setting that seemed to slow time.

Luxury, after all, isn’t always silver cutlery or white tablecloths.
Sometimes it’s a wooden board of perfectly chosen flavours, shared with wonderful people, along a coastline that knows how to host a perfect afternoon.
