Breakfast with Chef Lolo at Kaya Kweru
There are mornings that feel borrowed from a dream—slow, golden, and touched with the kind of calm that only the ocean can offer. On the Elephant Coast, where dawn stretches lazily over the water and the tide glimmers like poured silver, we woke to one of those rare perfect mornings.
We slipped out for a walk on the beach, the sand still cool beneath our feet, the air scented with salt and early sunlight. The ocean murmured beside us, a gentle rhythm guiding our steps. There was a softness in everything—the horizon, the breeze, the moment. It was the kind of start that resets the soul.
With our senses awakened and our mood as light as the morning air, we made our way to Kaya Kweru, where Luisgreeted us with his familiar warmth. A glint of excitement lit his eyes as he leaned in and whispered, “The chef has a healthy surprise for you this morning.”
That chef was LahLah—a man whose presence is as refreshing as the coastal air itself. Polite, soft-spoken, and impeccably mannered, he carries himself with a quiet confidence that only true passion brings. There is a deliberate grace in the way he moves, an artist’s attention to detail paired with a deep, genuine love for good food and good living.
He emerged from the kitchen with a dish that felt almost too beautiful for breakfast—a perfectly prepared fresh fish, expertly cooked and placed on a bed of crisp, vibrant salad. The colours alone were enough to make us pause: the glisten of the fish’s delicate flesh, the emerald leaves, the bright pops of garden vegetables, all arranged with the thoughtful precision of someone who knows that food should speak before it is tasted.
On the table beside us, fresh pão, still warm from the oven, invited us to tear into it. Its soft interior and golden crust filled the morning air with that unmistakable scent of true simplicity. Alongside it, fresh fruit juices—sunlit in their glasses, glowing shades of mango, pineapple, and citrus—completed the scene.
Everything tasted alive.
Bright.
Honest.
Fresh in a way that can only come from a place where the ocean and earth are not concepts but neighbours.
Each bite told a story: of the sea, of the hands that prepared it, of the joy that rises from uncomplicated, well-crafted food. Chef LahLah had created something nourishing not only for the body but the moment itself—a breakfast that felt like a celebration of being exactly where we were.
We loved every part of it.
The freshness.
The warmth.
The effortless luxury of eating something crafted with care, in a place where time slows down just enough to let you taste everything fully.
If travel is about discovering experiences that stay with you, then breakfast at Kaya Kweru—prepared by a chef with heart and flair, shared on a coast that feels untouched by hurry—ranks among the rare ones. The kind that linger long after the plates are cleared, calling you back again with the soft promise of another perfect morning.
